“Snodgrass wanted to get the reality of the Nazis into the poem,” says Larry Levis of 1977’s The Fuhrer Bunker, “a reality that constitutes not myths, but historical record.” Levis’s searching study of this sequence of dramatic monologues is both philosophical and prosodic in its approach, exploring the ethics and formal achievement of a volume which ultimately “testifies to the conceptual ability of tragedy to confront these men.”
